JOHNSTON: Bringing a Forgotten Story Back to Life through a feature film
There are thousands of stories from World War II. Some became famous. Others slowly disappeared into history.
The story of JOHNSTON should never be one of them.
We are currently developing JOHNSTON, a feature film about the men of USS Johnston (DD-557), her commanding officer Commander Ernest E. Evans, and one of the most extraordinary naval actions of World War II—the Battle off Samar on October 25, 1944.
But our goal is bigger than simply making a war movie.
We want to tell the story of the men.

Every sailor who served aboard Johnston was a real person. They had parents, wives, children, hometowns, friendships, hopes, fears and dreams. They had jobs aboard the ship, responsibilities to their shipmates, and people back home waiting for them.
As we develop the film, we are researching those men one by one. We are studying photographs, naval records, historical documents, technical drawings, survivor accounts, family histories and archival material. When we can identify the real sailor who stood at a particular gun, worked in the engine room, served on the bridge, passed ammunition or helped steer the ship, we want to know his name.
Because a name matters.
This is also why we are taking an unconventional approach to filmmaking. We are independent filmmakers, not a major Hollywood studio. We are using modern technology, including AI-assisted visual tools, to help us recreate people, places and moments that would otherwise be extremely difficult to bring to the screen.
But the technology isn't the story. The people are.
Our commitment is to use these tools responsibly—to preserve history, not rewrite it. Where history gives us the facts, we will follow them. Where the historical record leaves gaps, some scenes will necessarily be dramatized, but our goal will always be to remain faithful to the men, the ship and the circumstances in which they fought.

And we want families and historians to be part of that process.
This blog will be an ongoing series taking you behind the scenes of JOHNSTON: the history we are uncovering, the men we are researching, the ship we are rebuilding, the challenges of making the film, and the extraordinary stories we discover along the way.
Because more than eighty years later, we believe these men deserve to be remembered.
They were real.
They were young.
They had lives waiting for them.
And on October 25, 1944, they did something extraordinary.
We never know when we are living a memory for the ages.
